The English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) is the first type of course that students may take if they do not meet English language requirement for their intended course. ELICOS students basically come on student visas, tourist visas, or working holiday visas while students on tourist visas are allowed to undertake ELICOS maximum for three months and those on working holiday visas are maximum for four months. The ELICOS providers are normally dedicated colleges or centres. More than regular students the ELICOS is preferred by other individual students who like to improve English language course and head back to their home country. Students may choose to travel and learn as there are about 300 accredited ELICOS centres across Australia. These centres can either be private or public located in cities or touristic areas where tourists or working holiday people can enjoy learning English language and culture.
The providers design the ELICOS courses to meet different needs and objectives of students. English language requirements not met students are required to do full-time four to forty weeks ELICOS where they are entitled to comply with 20 hours-a-week study.
Other than ELICOS courses General English, English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Secondary School Preparation, Examination Preparation, and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) are offered by the centres. Many other tailored made English language courses are available for work, travel, or training purposes.
